Natural Gas Industry Makes
 Beef Donation to Charities

TransGas, the pipeline company of SaskEnergy, and nine of Saskatchewan's natural gas producers today announced a major donation of Saskatchewan-grown beef to help feed less fortunate families in southern Saskatchewan.

TransGas made the announcement together with the following companies:

  • Profico Energy Management Ltd.;
  • Penn West Petroleum;
  • Burlington Resources Canada;
  • Cavell Energy Corporation;
  • Murphy Canada Ltd.;
  • Nexen Marketing;
  • BP Gas & Power Canada;
  • Anadarko Canada Corp.; and
  • ARC Energy Trust Ltd.

Together, these companies will be donating $27,000 of beef to be shared between the following charities:

  • Salvation Army Food Bank, Swift Current;
  • Southwest Safe Shelter, Swift Current;
  • Herbert Group Home, Herbert;
  • Cypress Hills Ability Centre, Shaunavon;
  • Maple Creek & District Opportunities Inc., Maple Creek; and
  • Hunger In Moose Jaw, Moose Jaw.

"The natural gas industry plays a major role in the economies of many communities throughout the province, particularly those in southwest and south central Saskatchewan," said Daryl Posehn, Vice President, TransGas. "We all understand the hardship the BSE crisis has created for the entire livestock industry. Through this donation, all the companies involved want to show their support for Saskatchewan's beef industry, while also helping families who may need the services of these organizations."

The Salvation Army Food Bank in Swift Current and the Hunger In Moose Jaw program will each receive about 10,000 pounds of beef through this donation, which is approximately one year's supply for their food programs.

"The Salvation Army Food Bank in Swift Current greatly appreciates the generous donation of beef from TransGas and the southwest gas producers," said Captain Paul Loner, Salvation Army Food Bank, Swift Current. "The donated beef will go a long way towards meeting the needs of the hungry in southwest Saskatchewan and will also assist our local cattle industry. Indeed, all residents of southwest Saskatchewan will benefit when we experience this type of corporate generosity. We are very thankful for this timely gift."

Kathy Olson, Director of Hunger In Moose Jaw, was equally thankful and said the donation of beef will be distributed to as many families as possible.

"We feel we can reach 200 families, if not more, and that would be about 400 children," Olson said. "The donation of beef will also allow us to be innovative in providing children and families with beef in a variety of ways through the Children's Lunch Program, with possible Chili For Kids Days."

Olson added that the donation may allow Hunger In Moose Jaw to implement another series of the Community Kitchens and Junior Chef Programs.

"Children and their families will benefit from this incredible donation in a variety of ways. We are so excited that we have been given the opportunity to assist with helping meet the children and families' nutritional needs," Olson concluded.

The beef donation, purchased from Centennial Foodservice of Regina, comes exclusively from 100 per cent Saskatchewan-grown cattle.

"On behalf of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA), I am happy to see the Salvation Army, Hunger In Moose Jaw, and the other programs receive high-quality beef through a sponsorship such as this," said Terry Ostrander, Financial Chair, SSGA.

Over the next few months, volunteers from TransGas will distribute the beef to the community organizations as it is needed.
