New Winter Festival is Announced for Regina

KŌNA-FEST - Regina's Winter Festival
February 10th - March 5th, 2006
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

24 Days. 26 Events. One Great Toque.

A brand new citywide winter festival was announced today that will take place from February 10 - March 5, 2006 in Regina. The 24-day Festival combines new and existing events and activities throughout the city at outdoor and indoor venues.

"There are many great things to do in Regina in the winter and by bringing so many events together under one exciting new theme we can encourage more people, residents and visitors alike, to experience those activities. We have been overwhelmed by the support and participation of the event coordinators and I'm very pleased to say that we have a great mix of current events and some fabulous new ones," said Olivia Shumski, KŌNA-FEST Chair.

"The support from the community has also been very encouraging and of course we are absolutely thrilled to have SaskEnergy come on board as the Presenting Sponsor for KŌNA-FEST 2006. They bring event experience, great people and a variety of resources that we need to make this first year a huge success," said Ms Shumski.

At the media event held to launch KŌNA-FEST, Mr. Doug Kelln, President of SaskEnergy stated, "We are pleased to support Tourism Regina and their partners in creating KŌNA-FEST, which we believe is a winning concept that will expand for years to come. Saskatchewan winters offer many wonderful possibilities for family fun and KŌNA-FEST will provide the common thread that ties everything together into one big celebration. We look forward to being part of it all!"

"Tourism Regina's goal for KŌNA-FEST is to bring more people to Regina during the winter months. Organizers strongly believe that KŌNA-FEST has the potential to do just that. With the new events and the fantastic annual events we will see more people out and about this winter," said Steve McLellan, Executive Director of Tourism Regina

"KŌNA-FEST is a prime example of the strong sense of community that exists in our city, taking full advantage of our winter season," said Mayor Fiacco. "I am positive that KŌNA-FEST will build on Regina's continuing success, providing a great attraction for residents and visitors alike, another reason to love Regina."

In February 2005, the Tourism Regina Events Committee (TREC) hosted an Event Input Session that brought together almost 100 of Regina's most creative and experienced event experts. This group of volunteers, event managers, sport organization representatives and facility managers came together to provide input on what types of events Regina can and should look to host in the next 2-15 years. At the end of the session, a number of events were identified that Tourism Regina and volunteers would work towards bringing to fruition. One of the events identified in the Event Input Session was the creation of a new citywide winter festival. One year later, Tourism Regina and the Tourism Regina Events Committee are pleased to announce the first event that was born out of the 2005 Event Input Session: "KŌNA-FEST, Regina's Winter Festival, Presented by SaskEnergy."

Pronounced "koona", KŌNA is one of the Cree words for snow.
