April 22, 2005 - Sask. 1st Call enhances safety for Saskatchewan residents

May 23, 2006

As spring begins, you are urged to 'Call Before You Dig'

Contractors and homeowners across Saskatchewan are reminded that, as the spring construction season gets underway, safety is a top priority. Whether it is landscaping or building a deck in your yard, preparation for a new housing development, utility upgrades, or any other type of activity that requires excavation, a call to Sask. 1st Call is crucial in order to have underground lines marked before digging begins.

Sask. 1st Call, Saskatchewan's underground facility location screening and notification service, is entering its fourth full year of operation. Sask 1st Call has now expanded to 24 members and represents more than a quarter million kilometres of buried infrastructure across Saskatchewan, all of which can now be accessed by a single, toll-free number. All member companies, ranging from SaskEnergy and other energy pipeline companies to SaskTel (see attached list) believe in the importance of increasing public safety, while reducing facility damage. We also want to reinforce that excavators should call all other organizations with underground facilities in the area before digging.

"Safety is a priority not only for homeowners and excavators but for all the member companies of Sask 1st Call," says Doug Kelln, President of SaskEnergy. "The first step to any safety program is the identification of potential hazards. With one simple call, you will notify any one of the 24 member companies who have underground facilities within your dig area. That's why Sask 1st Call may be one of the most important numbers that you will call this summer."

In addition to the telephone service, Sask 1st Call now offers customers the option to request line locates through fax and website services at www.sask1stcall.com. These new services are designed to help streamline the large number of inquiries that take place between the peak months of April to September.

A call to the Sask. 1st Call toll-free number will connect you to a trained and experienced Customer Service Representative who will take all the pertinent information concerning the proposed excavation and enter it into the screening database. The software will then determine which of the member companies have underground facilities at that location, and automatically send out a notification that a line locate is required.

There is no charge to customers calling Sask. 1st Call at 1-866-828-4888. If you wish to learn more about Sask 1st Call, please read the Spring 2006 newsletter at http://www.sask1stcall.com/newsletters.htm.
