SaskEnergy Donates $100,000 to Regina Food Bank for Commercial Kitchen

The Regina & District Food Bank today received a $100,000 donation from SaskEnergy to build the first commercial kitchen at a food bank in Western Canada, and only the second facility of its kind in the country. The commercial kitchen will be used for on-site training and education, and will provide the food bank the capacity to process surplus and potential waste food into high quality nutritional products.

Through a partnership with SIAST, the Regina Food Bank's new commercial kitchen will be used for an applied certificate program where graduates will learn new skills in high demand by the food service industry. SIAST will provide chef instructors who will ensure graduates will receive industry recognized certification.

"We have a long-standing relationship with the Regina Food Bank on many levels, from initiatives such as this, to the volunteer work our employees undertake each year. This is more than a donation from our company - this is about helping the Food Bank build capacity to meet the needs of our community."

SaskEnergy's donation will be used by the Regina Food Bank to renovate existing space to establish a commercial kitchen, using industrial equipment donated or acquired through auction.

The development of the SaskEnergy commercial kitchen is key to our trades training in the food services industry that will provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to gain suitable employment", explains Wayne Hellquist, Chief Executive Officer, Regina & District Food Bank. "Furthermore, the commercial kitchen will allow the Food Bank to process foods that might otherwise be discarded allowing it to be turned into nutritious products that can be frozen and distributed to families and individuals who use the food bank."

The Regina Food Bank commercial kitchen is expected to be in operation by October.
