Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Our province is changing, and we’re changing with it!
SaskEnergy is currently installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) across the province.
AMI will play a big part in SaskEnergy’s plans to renew and upgrade our metering infrastructure.
Once fully implemented, new natural gas technology
- Actual billing every month instead of estimates.
- No more meter reader visits.
- Billing questions answered faster and more efficiently.
- Simple and quick tenancy changes.
Upgrading our Infrastructure
The goal of the AMI project is to replace manual meter reading services with an automated solution.
SaskEnergy will retrofit the majority of our existing gas meters with an AMI communications gas module to be installed
at residential, farm and business customers across Saskatchewan. However, a small number of customers with a gas meter
approaching the end of its service life will have their meter replaced with a new meter and an AMI module.
Once installed and operational, the modules will send daily information on gas usage. Consumption will be recorded and calculated the same way it is today. Meter reading will no longer require periodic trips by personnel to physically look at a customer’s meter,
and estimates for billing purposes will be significantly reduced or eliminated.
Province-wide Installation Underway
Customers will be notified in advance of when the upgrade to the meter is taking place. They will also see service representatives from Grid One Solutions in their neighbourhood. Grid One Solutions has been contracted to complete these upgrades for SaskEnergy and have significant experience in the installation of natural gas modules. During the installation process, there will be no interruption to natural gas service.
After the upgrades have been completed, the meters will continue to be read manually. Billing processes will not change immediately. Within a few months of the upgrades, the AMI system will be activated to securely send and use consumption data for billing purposes.
